Bio - Richard A Smith

I was born in rural South England, where my relationship with the landscape, and ultimately photography, began. At age 15, I discovered my mother’s old Kodak 127mm box camera, and with lofty ambition I embarked on my first portrait session: shots of my father and an in-depth study of Charlie, the family cat. A technical course at the Brighton College of Technology followed by a degree in fine art photography at the University of Derby, cemented my passion for landscape photography and, in particular, black and white printmaking. In my twenty years of working as a photographer, I have lived and worked in London and New York City, and have been fortunate to travel the world with my craft. My photographs have exhibited in London, New York and Miami. As a photographer I am constantly making pictures, and after fifteen years of city living, my new life in the Hudson Valley has given me the opportunity to return to the landscape, a constant source of inspiration and transformation. When not behind the camera, you’ll find me stacking rocks or foraging for mushrooms in the river valley behind my house.
